How to Calculate Output in Tonnes per Day

- Output in kg per minute = line speed (m/min) × web width (m) × basis weight (GSM) ÷ 1000.
- Output in tonnes per day = the above × actual running minutes × efficiency factor ÷ 1000.
- A realistic efficiency factor is 0.70 to 0.85 after roll changes, stoppages and waste.
A worked example: a line running 150 m/min at 2.8 m web width and 17 GSM produces roughly 7.1 kg per minute. On one 8-hour shift at a 0.75 efficiency factor that is about 2.6 tonnes, and across three shifts it approaches 7.7 tonnes per day. Then convert that figure into packs: if a toilet roll weighs 100 grams, 2.6 tonnes equals about 26,000 rolls per shift. That is the number to compare against your market size and distribution capacity, not the machine's headline speed.

The smartest way to raise output is not always higher speed; it is more parallel lanes. A 2800 mm facial tissue machine can run four, six or eight lanes depending on the finished tissue size. Multiply lane count by cutting speed in sheets per minute to get true output. Ask the supplier to state exactly how many lanes run at your target tissue size, because catalogues usually quote the maximum achievable at the smallest size — a number you will never see on your own floor.
The golden rule: do not buy speed, buy compatibility. A machine matched to your available parent roll width and your market's pack format will out-produce a faster machine that does not fit.

- Neglecting the packaging machine: a fast cutting line feeding slow manual packing creates a bottleneck that destroys real output.
- Not fixing the basis weight in the contract, so a machine calibrated for 13 GSM arrives while your market wants a 19 GSM product.

Ask for a detailed offer stating: web width in mm, both design speed and guaranteed operating speed, lane count at your size, total installed power in kW, voltage, frequency and phases, brands of core components such as motors, drives and the control system, a full one-year list of fast-wear spare parts, installation and commissioning duration, plus dimensions and shipping weight so you can estimate containers. Insist on a factory acceptance test before shipment that runs the line on the exact parent roll you will use, not on an ideal sample roll.
