Why Tooling Deserves a Separate Study From the Machine
When importing a plastic injection or metal casting line from China, most investors focus on the machine alone: clamping force in tons, shot volume, cycle speed, controller brand. But a machine produces nothing by itself. The mold determines the shape of your product, its dimensional accuracy, its surface finish and your final unit cost. In many projects the mold set exceeds one third of the total line value, yet it is ordered at the last minute without a clear technical specification sheet. The recurring result: molds that arrive dimensionally correct but cannot reach the contracted cycle time, or that begin showing wear at half their expected life.
A mold is a capital asset in its own right, with its own service life, maintenance schedule and spare-parts inventory, separate from the machine that holds it. Treating it as a minor accessory is the single most expensive mistake in plastic and metal manufacturing projects.
Cavity Count: The Equation That Sets Your Cost
Cavity count is the first technical decision, and it directly drives both price and the machine specification you will need. The calculation is simple and should be done before negotiating:
Hourly output = (3600 ÷ cycle time in seconds) × number of cavities × efficiency factor (0.85 on average).
If the expected cycle time is 25 seconds with 4 cavities, estimated output = (3600 ÷ 25) × 4 × 0.85 ≈ 490 pieces per hour, roughly 3,900 pieces per eight-hour shift. Compare that figure against your target monthly demand before approving any quotation.
Doubling cavities from 4 to 8 rarely doubles the mold price; it typically raises it by only 60–75%, which clearly lowers your per-piece cost. But a larger mold needs higher clamping force, a wider injection unit and larger platens. Cavity count must therefore be fixed before the machine specification is approved, not after — otherwise you will be buying a second machine or settling for half your planned capacity.
Mold Steel: Match the Grade to Production Volume
The gap between a $6,000 mold and an $18,000 mold for the same part is usually explained by steel grade, heat treatment and machining precision, not by product geometry. The table below shows the grades most common in the Chinese market:

When You Need Stainless Mold Steel
If the product is food-grade or medical, if the resin contains PVC or halogenated compounds that release corrosive gases when melted, or if your plant sits in a humid coastal region, specify S136 or an equivalent. The price difference may reach 25–35%, but it is far cheaper than re-cutting corroded cavities after a single year.
Golden rule: never buy a mold that outlives the commercial life of your product, and never one that falls short of your three-year production plan.
Guaranteed Shot Count and Contract Clauses
A verbal assurance that the mold "will last for years" is worthless in a dispute. Make the following clauses a written part of your purchase order:
- A guaranteed shot count stated numerically (for example 500,000 shots) with a clear definition of what counts as a covered failure.
- Steel mill certificate and heat number, with the right to verify the original steel supplier.
- Hot runner components, ejectors and springs specified by commercial brand name, not by generic description.
- Delivery of T1 samples and a signed dimensional inspection report before shipment, with photographs of the cavity surfaces.
- A set of spare wear parts supplied in the same shipment: ejector pins, seals and quick cooling connectors.
- Clear allocation of responsibility for post-delivery modifications and who pays freight if the mold must be returned for rework.
The Documentation That Must Arrive With the Mold
A mold without its documentation is an incomplete asset, because no local maintenance shop will be able to work on it. Require editable 2D and 3D drawings in STEP format, the cooling-channel layout with channel diameters, an illustrated disassembly and cleaning manual, a spare-parts list with standard part numbers, and the heat-treatment record. These files turn the mold from a closed box into a maintainable asset that any qualified workshop can service or duplicate later.
A Practical Summary Before Issuing the Purchase Order
Start from your target monthly demand, derive cavity count and cycle time from it, then choose the steel grade based on total expected shots over three years, and only then approve the machine specification to match the mold. Reversing this order is exactly what leads to lines running at half their design capacity.
